Written Personal Statement

Based on the events of my life I have been able to form my own philosophy on how to conduct myself in the professional world and my personal relationships. Although it is not an original philosophy, The Golden Rule is something that I strongly believe in.  People should treat each other as they would like to be treated, in my opinion. Up until this point in my life, this philosophy has become quite important to me over the years and how I try to live my life everyday.
We as a society, should put less emphasis on the flaws and shortcomings of people, and instead highlight their positive attributes. We need to educate ourselves to better help each other, for the betterment of everyone as a whole.  This is why I was drawn to the Deaf community. I feel strongly that Deaf culture should not be looked at as a “disability” or something that needs to be fixed, but rather as a different culture having its own language and unique characteristics.
I want to devote myself to changing the stigma that is associated with interpreters. Interpreting is a real profession and should be treated like one. It takes a special type of individual with a unique set of skills to become an interpreter. It requires such characteristics as quick thinking, persistence, solid morals, and the type of attitude that welcomes new challenges.
I am very passionate about interpreting and love learning about all of the different components and variations that are associated with it. Interpreting presents a mental challenge that requires the interpreter to always be thinking on their feet. I love that type of career, one that is not mundane and challenges me to improve every time.
